The city of Munich was under an acute terror alert after three shooters killed several people in an attack in the Bavarian capital.
German media reported that six people were killed and many others wounded in the shooting in a shopping center on Friday just before 6 p.m. local time. Public transport has been halted and the main train station evacuated as police search for the suspects. Witnesses told authorities that three heavily armed individuals were behind the attack, which wounded many others.
Federal police and special forces have joined in the operation. The shooting happened at the Olympic Shopping Center, located about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) northwest of the city center. It opened in 1972, in time for the Olympic Games in Germany’s third-largest city and is one of the biggest shopping centers in Bavaria.
The incident occurred amid heightened tension in Germany, following an attack on Monday near the Bavarian town of Treuchtlingen in which two people were critically injured with an ax on a train by a 17-year-old Afghan refugee, whom police later shot and killed as he fled the scene.
