Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen dodged a question Monday on whether the election of Donald Trump as president could destroy the global economy.
Speaking at an event in Philadelphia, Yellen was directly asked by an attendee if electing the presumptive GOP presidential nominee would lead to a worldwide economic crash. The unidentified attendee said he had heard in the media that Trump posed a significant economic risk.
“They have mentioned … that if the Republican candidate becomes president of the United States, that there is a possibility of an economic crash all over the world, because of the world viewing Donald Trump how they view Donald Trump. Is that a possibility?” he asked.
Yellen, who leads a central bank that fiercely guards its political independence, sidestepped with a smile.
